Windows 7 losses local Domain authentication after a VPN connection is made

The problem happens when you try to use a local domain resource like printing or network file access after you have connected to a VPN. This happens even if you have de-selected 'Use default gateway on remote network'.

The problem lies with the the VPN connection using 'UseRasCredentials' by default on any VPN connection it creates. This will aid in using network resources on the remote network. If you connect from a non-domain connected computer this is a good thing. However, if you connect from a domain computer to another domain or even a non-domain computer you will lose your local domain access as it is now forwarding the credentials for the VPN connection to you local domain resource and will fail.

To fix this you have to change the 'UseRasCredentials' setting for the VPN connection to '0' from '1'.

Solution:
  1. Locate the .pbk file (Dial-Up Phonebook) which should be located at:
    - '%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk
    - or just click the 'Windows' button and type in '*.pbk' to locate.
  2. Open the file 'rasphone.pbk' using Notepad or any other text editor.
  3. Search for 'UseRasCredentials' and change the value from '1' to '0'.
  4. If you have multiple VPN connections configured you can just continue the process for all the matches.
  5. Save the file and re-connect to the VPN and you should now have no problem with local resources when connected.
